A plasterer for inside and outside the house

Plastering and rendering are the same trade on different sides of the wall. Inside, plaster gives walls and ceilings a smooth, flat finish ready for decorating. Outside, render protects the brickwork from the weather and gives the house a fresh face.

Because we do both, a job that needs a bit of each, such as an extension that needs plastering inside and rendering outside, is one call and one firm.

Will plastering make a mess of my house?

Keeping things clean is something we take pride in. Every area we work in is sheeted first, and all the plaster is mixed in one set place, covered in plastic and boarded out. When the job is finished, the room is left as it was before we started, apart from the new plaster.

How long before I can paint new plaster?

There is no exact time, because it depends on how warm the room is. New plaster goes dark brown and then turns light pink when it is dry, which usually takes anywhere from 2 to 7 days. Once it is dry, seal it before painting, with a plaster sealer or a coat of watered-down emulsion.

What do I need to do before the plasterers arrive?

Clear the room of furniture and fittings as far as you can, so there is a good space to work in. Any wallpaper has to come off before the walls are plastered. Everything else is sheeted before we start.

Can you plaster over Artex?

Yes, plastering over Artex is not a problem. It can take a little more work, because the ceiling or wall sometimes needs scraping before it is skimmed. Textured coatings put up before 2000 can contain asbestos, so an older Artex ceiling may need testing before anyone scrapes it.

What is the difference between skimming and floating?

Skimming is the finishing coat: a thin layer of plaster, usually 2 to 3mm, put on in two coats to give a smooth surface ready for decorating. Floating is the base coat that goes onto brick or blockwork before skimming, to straighten the wall. It is usually sand and cement, Hardwall or Browning.

What kinds of render do you use?

Traditional sand and cement render, which is usually painted once it is dry, and through-coloured renders such as K Rend and monocouche, which come ready-coloured and do not need painting. We also do pebble dashing, spar dashing, Canterbury dashing and Tyrolean finishes. Which one suits your house depends on the walls and the look you want.

Do you give free estimates?

Yes. Call 07464 735009, email daltonjones747@gmail.com or send the form at the top of this page, saying what needs doing and where the property is, and we will arrange a free estimate.

Which areas do you cover?

We are local to High Wycombe and work across south Buckinghamshire, including Marlow, Beaconsfield, Amersham, Gerrards Cross and Princes Risborough, and further out to Maidenhead, Henley-on-Thames, Windsor, Slough, Reading, Aylesbury and Oxford. Our coverage page lists every area.
